[Samkwang Column]:: How to make the best choice Author사내기자 Date2024.05.14 Hit388

We think that everything will magically work out if we make a big decision in life.

But in reality, rather than a single major decision, the correction of ordinary moments comes together to determine the future.

So how can I make a choice and the best decision that I don't regret?

First, define the problem properly

A problem has occurred and resulted in a solution, but no amount of solution is often solved.

Why is that?

The reason is that the 'real problem' has not been identified.

Most humans immediately switch to resolution mode when a problem occurs and don't think if the problem itself is the right problem.

In order to really solve the problem, we need to define the problem first.

The definition of 'real problem' is an example of a column.

In one shelter in the U.S., more than 3 million dogs wait for adoption every year, but more than 1 million dogs are not adopted every year.

So what solutions do people think of here?

Most people will think about how to adopt dogs well.

But one shelter thought, 'What can I do to fundamentally reduce the number of dogs to adopt?'

The shelter said it would provide long-term feed to owners who visited the shelter to give up their dogs, knowing that owners often give up their dogs because they cannot afford feed.

Thanks to this program, 75% of people are visiting the shelter.

As such, we need to start thinking about problem definitions first, not the solution mode immediately when a problem arises.

Second, explore solutions with integrated thinking

Suppose you're thinking about what to do because you're not on good terms with your co-worker,

Usually, we look for solutions based on the dichotomous thinking of 'stay at work or leave'.

If you fall into this dichotomy, you won't see any other alternative.

On the contrary, instead of wrestling with dichotomous alternatives, how does integrative thinking change?

We can come up with solutions such as, "Can I stay at work and ask for a different team with my colleagues?"

In order to come up with a better and best solution, integrated thinking can come up with a much better solution than dichotomous thinking.

If you're all thinking about either X or Y, please think again if you can find an alternative that combines both.

Third, imagine it's the end of your life

Studies have shown that older people in their 7s to 80s are happier than younger people.

What is the reason?

The reason is, "Life is short!"

In other words, older people can make better decisions because they feel that life is short and they put what really matters first.

Steve Jobs also looks in the mirror every morning and says to himself, 'If today was the last day of my life, would I want to do what I'm going to do today?'

If today is the last day of my life, are there people who don't want to make the best choice for me right now?

Think about how short life is when decisions are tough!

You're going to start to see things that are really important.
